WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURS WHEN DEMOLISHING YOUR HOME?
Organising a knockdown-rebuild can be stressful enough without the added pressure from unreasonable neighbours who seek to slow down your development. Theres nothing worse than having one of your neighbours complain as soon as they find out that you’ve decided to knock down your home to build your dream one; Opposition, defiance and hinderances can be highly frustrating for both the owner, the demolition company carrying out the work and even your builder.
Despite the exceptions that get upset over the most minuscule things, the majority of your neighbours will be happy with demolition process and keep patient while the work is being carried out. However, the best that you can do is talk through your demolition process and explain the most likely timeframes to ensure that you address any concerns before works begin.
We recommend talking to your neighbours before receiving council approvals and again before you commence demolition. Let's be honest - people often don’t like change plus keep in mind your neighbours probably won’t feel pleased living through a demolition followed by a lengthy build. While your neighbours will receive several offical notifications of the development, from certifiers, council, the demolisher, the builder and most likely even yourself, they may still worry about whether it will affect them.
YOU’VE DONE EVERYTHING IN YOUR WILLPOWER TO ENSURE YOUR NEIGHBOURS OF THE DEMOLITION PROCESS YET THERE WILL ALWAYS BE 1 OR 2 WHO COMPLAIN.
How To Deal With Complaints
While the whole community is well and truly informed of the demolition works that are to begin some neighbours are not having it. It’s important to note that you will have trouble with 1 or 2 complaining neighbours.
For instance, here is a neighbour who has complained about the demolition process that was happening within her street. This particular neighbour was complaining about the dust and asbestos. Even though she lived down the street a safe distance away from the demolition site.
This is what the neighbour had to say:
”Ensuring community satisfaction is our priority"As a neighbour with concerns about asbestos removal. Home Demolitions offered a solution but never acted upon it.I never even got notification of the correct date. I am very unhappy with the way this company went about this demolition.”
Home demolitions takes complaints such as this seriously and we ensured her that the asbestos would not affect her health or living environment. Home Demolitions prides themselves on the safety of their workers and the community, environment and public. We do everything in our power to ensure that heath and OH&S is being followed carefully.
Home Demolitions response to this comment was:
“Thanks for the feedback. Whilst the term neighbour generally refers to someone directly adjacent, your concerns as a member of the same street are just as valid. Unfortunately most Australian homes contain asbestos as it was a very popular building material for many decades, rest assured though, as when properly removed, handled and disposed of it posses no danger to those in the surrounding area. Again, sincere apologies that you did not feel comfortable swimming in your pool knowing that a demolition was occurring down the street. Fortunately, the community at large were pleased with our works and are very eager to see what new beautiful home will be built in it’s place. All the best.”
This particular neighbour was in no real heath danger as the asbestos was handled by specialists that safely remove and dispose of asbestos with our letting any particles float into the sky. It’s highly unlikely that any neighbours even adjacent to the demolition site are in danger of being exposed to asbestos particles.
The point is no matter how hard you follow all the right procedures and do your best to inform the community 1 or 2 neighbours will always complain. Although, most of the community tolerate and are patient throughout the demolition and building process.
